영국여행 이야기(22)_런던에서 온 두번째 편지

정말 오랜만에 딸의 편지를 올립니다. 어떤 부모가 자식을 사랑하지 않겠어요. 눈에 넣어도 아프지 않죠. 하지만, 나는 먹고사느라 아이들이 자랄 때 제대로 챙기지 못했어요. 이건 정말이거든요. 이런 말을 어느 사석에서 한 적이 있는데, 어떤 분이 대뜸 아주 잘한 일이라는군요. 한국에서 아이들이 잘 되려면, 할아버지의 재력, 엄마의 정보력, 아빠의 무관심이 삼위일체를 이루어야 한답니다. 할아버지의 재력도 없고, 엄마의 정보력은 더구나 없는데다 아빠의 무관심 속에서 아이들이 방치된 채 컸다고 사실대로 고백했습니다. 그랬더니 나더러 진짜 짜증난다고 하더군요. 애들한테 아무것도 한 것이 없는데 스스로 자기들 인생을 헤쳐나간다고 하니까 말이죠.

초등학교 때부터 책가방 싸주고, 학원시간표 짜주고, 내신성적 관리해주는 환경이 우리나라의 교육풍토입니다. 이런 아이들이 만약 나중에 중요한 지위에 오르면 어떻게 될까요? 이렇게 사육되는 아이들이 과연 세상을 제대로 살아갈 수 있을까요?

딸의 여자친구는 싱가포르대학을 졸업하고 런던의 Clifford Chance라는 법률회사에서 변호사로 근무하는 중국계입니다. 그 친구가 특히 한국 노래와 드라마 좋아한답니다. 한국적인 것에 대한 각별한 애정이 있다고 합니다. 말하자면 중국어와 영어가 모국어인 친구입니다. 그 애가 회사에 휴가를 받아 한 달간 한국에서 보내고 싶다고 하는데, 딸은 그 애를 우리 집에서 함께 지낼 수 있도록 하면 어떻겠냐고 물어왔습니다. 나와 아들은 좋다고 했는데, 아내는 영 떨떠름해했습니다. 말도 통하지 않는 애를 며칠이면 몰라도 한 달씩이나 뒤치다꺼리를 해줘야 할 생각을 하니 불편했던 모양입니다.

그러나, 아내를 설득했죠. 우리 사는 모습 그대로 함께 살면 된다, 우리가 먹는 것에 숟가락 젓가락 하나 더 놓으면 된다, 라면 먹을 때 같이 먹고, 마트의 푸드코트에서 외식할 때 같이 먹으면 된다… 한 달간 먹여주고 재워주고 구경시켜 주면 주싱가포르 한국대사도 못하는 일을 우리가 할 수 있는 것 아니냐는 말로… 아내는 못이기는 척하고 싱가포르 아이의 방문을 허락했죠. 그래서 엄마에게 고맙다고 어제 편지를 보내왔습니다.

일년 전쯤에 보내 온 편지는 로스쿨에 들어간다는 얘기였는데, 이제는 법률공부에 제법 재미를 들였나 봅니다. 점점 법률가처럼 생각하느라 조금은 조심스러워하는 모습이 보입니다.

I just finished my tutorials and am in the computer lab at school! School was fun as I studied a bit yesterday. If you do not cover the material and turn up in tutorial, it is very difficult to follow what the tutor is talking about but if you do your work, then it is very pleasant! I am actually doing the bare minimum at the moment and getting the feel what Criminal Law, Equity and Trust, EU Law and Land law is about. The topics I am learning (apart from Criminal Law) are actually very relevant to my day to day life. There are a lot of terminologies used in EU Law & Equity and Trust that appear at work which is why it motivates me to study. Land Law comes into picture as I have been actively searching for a flat! Mom - I now know what the difference of freehold and leasehold is - which is a question that you have asked me last year!!! Criminal law is not relevant to my daily life (it would be a problem if is was!!) but from a perspective where I can protect my rights, I think it is very useful. Obviously, my research essay will lead me to dig deep in the area of Company Law in the UK - Directors Duty in particular. Yesterday, I was thinking (haven't conveyed to action yet!) about writing and publishing an article about Hedge Fund Industry from a legal perspective. European countries have been working together to create a UCITS (Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities) platform (which is an investment vehicle to aim to allow collective investment schemes to operate freely throughout the EU on the basis of a single authorisation from one member state). As the regulation is updated regularly and this is something that is at the intersection between finance (fund linked products) and legal, I should attempt to do some research.

Recently I have realised that I am looking a lot of things around me from a legal perspective now when it comes to drafting documents, talking to friends etc... continuously worried about whether what I am saying is specific enough... I am becoming very analytic!!!

From next week at work, I will be incredibly busy. I need to go into work tomorrow to prepare a lot of drafts so that Legal can review them next week. Besides, Louise will be out of the office next week, which means that I have to cover her.

Later today, I will be watching a movie with Kiran about the founder of the Facebook... called Social Networking...which I think it will be interesting...

This movie better be good as this is my treat for the forthcoming horrible week!
